Maasai Mara National Reserve is widely considered Africa’s greatest wildlife reserve. Each year the Mara plays host to the world’s greatest natural spectacle, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. In the month of July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life-giving grass in the north brings more than 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single massive herd. It is a spectacular entrance in a surging column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon. At the Mara River, they mass together on the banks before finally plunging forward through the raging waters, creating commotion as they fight against swift currents and waiting crocodiles. The wildebeest brings new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of regeneration of the grasslands, but for the predators that follow the herds. The Mara Game Reserve has been called the Kingdom of Lions and these regal and powerful hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and smaller predators such as Jackals.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a conservation area and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area, is recognized by one private organization as one of Africa. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2 to 3 million years ago, is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). The estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 to 5,800 meters (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high.
The Ngorongoro Crater also includes most of the animal species found in East Africa. The large animals in the crater include the black rhinoceros. There also are many other ungulates: the wildebeest, Burchell’s, the Grant’s, and Waterbuck occur mainly near Lerai Forest. There is no topic; giraffes also are absent, possibly because of a lack of browse species. Cheetahs, lions, African wild dogs, and leopards are rarely seen. Although the thought of as “a natural enclosure” for a very wide variety of wildlife, 20 percent or more of the wildebeest and half the zebra populations vacate the crater in the wet season. Lake Magadi, a large lake in the southwest of the crater, is often inhabited by thousands of mainly Lesser Flamingoes.
